Five Easy Ways to Enjoy Kithul Treacle

One Sri Lankan pantry favourite, five simple ways to serve it. Start with a little treacle and add more to taste.

1. Curd and treacle

Serve curd in a small bowl and spoon treacle over it. Keep the traditional clay curd pot alongside for a familiar Sri Lankan table setting.

2. Pancakes

Drizzle treacle over cooked pancakes. If you usually reach for maple syrup, try kithul as a different topping with its own distinctive flavour. This is a serving alternative, not a claim that the two taste identical.

3. Bread or roti

Enjoy a little treacle with bread or roti for an easy breakfast or snack.

4. Banana or yoghurt

Pair treacle with sliced banana, or spoon it over plain yoghurt. Add it just before serving.

5. Vanilla ice cream

Finish a bowl of vanilla ice cream with treacle for a simple dessert.
